And in the naked light I saw

People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence

“Fools” said I, “You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you”
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said “The words of the prophets
Are written on subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence”

néma hangok

jó barátom sötét árny
egy szóra betérek hozzád
az elmúlt hosszú éjszakán
álmomban egy látomás ült rám
nem ereszt azóta sem, belém fúrta karjait,
mint mindig,
a lopakodó csönd.

hiába futottam álmok után
szűk utcák sötét hajnalán
karcsú lámpák szórták a fényt
kerültem a nyirkos hűvös szélt
szemem előtt örvénylett a karcsú, fehér fény
s elültek rég
a csend hangjai.

a síkos fényben láttam
ezreket, vagy többet is tán
kik szóltak, de nem beszéltek
hallgattak és nem zenéltek
énekeltek de nem daloltak soha még
igazán,
ömlött rég, a csend.

balgák mit sem tudtok
kiáltottam s a csend nőtt tovább
figyeljetek mit mondok
fogjátok kezem mit kinyújtok
de szavaim csak kopogtak mint az eső,
s zuhantak, mint a csend.

imádkoztak, letérdeltek
az izzó fényhez, mit emeltek
majd mondták mind
egyszerre és hangosan
a próféták dörgő szava
szól a földalatti vonaton,
az ablakon,
s elér a csend hangjához.
